The Baekdudaegan Mountain Range is an important motif for me in solving the topic of modernization of ink and tradition. This is because the Baekdudaegan Mountain Range is a symbol of a new method, not a traditional inheritance, and a resonance that can resonate deeply within. Starting from Mt. Baekdu, Mt. Geumgangsan, Mt.Odaesan, Mt. Seoraksan, Mt. Taebaek, and Mt.Jiri, Korea’s great mountain range extends 1,400km long. Not only is there a spiritual energy flowing through the mountain range, but also seasonal changes, a thousand strangely shaped rocks, and all sorts of things that create the ultimate in harmony.
We have been continuing our work for a long time to capture everything inherent in Daegan, right down to its shape. This work, Baekdudaegan, is a reinterpretation and composition of the image of the mountain by connoting the natural scenery inherent in the Daegan conceptually, subjectively, and ideologically, rather than expressing it as if explaining a specific area or part of the Daegan, and contrasting the waves of the ink clouds. I focused on clearly expressing the tension and visual formative lightness of the screen. In addition, emphasis was placed on maximizing the liveliness of the mountain’s energy through the effective use of rich and radiant ink and the variety of strong strokes.
